Every day the world becomes more con­nect­ed through tech­nol­o­gy, trade, human­i­tar­i­an work, and shared envi­ron­men­tal resources. Strong lead­er­ship is an increas­ing­ly need­ed asset, the kind of lead­er­ship that can gal­va­nize mem­bers from dif­fer­ent cul­tures to respond to a com­mon goal.

The Cer­tifi­cate in Glob­al Lead­er­ship from Online and Con­tin­u­ing Edu­ca­tion at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Alber­ta has been designed to empow­er lead­ers with the capac­i­ty for a glob­al mind­set and an abil­i­ty to lead in mul­ti­cul­tur­al set­tings. Learn­ers in this online pro­gram will focus on top­ics such as world views, polit­i­cal and cul­tur­al com­plex­i­ty, cross-cul­tur­al com­mu­ni­ca­tion, delib­er­a­tive dis­course, and tech­no­log­i­cal changes.

This cer­tifi­cate will be of val­ue to indi­vid­u­als inter­est­ed in work­ing with­in a glob­al con­text and devel­op­ing lead­er­ship skills to draw cul­tures clos­er togeth­er. Learn­ers come from a vari­ety of indus­tries, vol­un­teer orga­ni­za­tions, gov­ern­ment sec­tor, and small to large enterprises.

If later you decide to apply for the full program, the course you’ve taken will be applied toward your Certificate as long as it is still part of the program plan at the time of your application. Please note, program requirements are subject to change over time.

Enrolling in the pro­gram is a require­ment if you want to obtain the cer­tifi­cate. You may apply for admis­sion as you start your stud­ies, or, if you pre­fer, after you have tak­en one or more cours­es. We are open to stu­dents with a vari­ety of edu­ca­tion­al and pro­fes­sion­al back­grounds. Our expec­ta­tion is that you have a com­mit­ment to learn and achieve your con­tin­u­ing edu­ca­tion goals.

This part-time program is comprised of three core courses offered online and self-paced. Each course is equivalent to 39 hours, for a total of 117 instructional hours. Most students choose to complete the certificate requirements within one to two years.

A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 is required to obtain the citation.

To qualify for program completion you are required to submit a request to obtain your credential. For a breakdown of details and how to qualify, visit the program completion page.

  • An appli­ca­tion fee of $100 is required for admis­sion into the program.
  • Tuition is paid on a course-by-course basis as you reg­is­ter for your classes.
  • Cours­es are GST-exempt.
  • Eli­gi­ble for the Cana­da-Alber­ta Job Grant.
